FINGERPRINTS
"You know there are little ones in the house when you have to wash the soap before you can use it" my StepDad used to say. His gruff mumbling gave the impression of being annoyed by the 'paw prints' on everything!
Turns out, a tender ping rang in his heart too, whenever he'd come upon the little signatures left by the giggle brigade.
Fingerprints is in honour of the creative, life-affirming delight of being with and working with children.
This department is filled with activities, mucky-stuff recipes, skill builder ideas and a bunch of other inspirations for the parents, teachers and other caregivers of birth - 12 year olds.

Capers
2 1/2 - 5+ yrs
SUPPLIES: newspapers; 12 " x 18" (approx.) inexpensive white fabric per child; scissors; fabric markers
METHOD: Spread 3-5 layers of newspaper to protect work areas. Lay fabric on newspaper. Help child create designs on cape. Follow manufacturers instruction to 'set' marker colour. Use top (12") corners to tie loosely around childs neck.

Tip: Fabric markers are more appropriate for use with very young children than fabric crayons. The marker colours are more vibrant and they do not require as much pressure to apply. Be extra careful fabric markers 'stain' anything they touch. Keep little hands focused on putting designs only where you want them.
SunSpots
2 1/2 - 5 yrs
SUPPLIES: dark construction paper; various objects - small blocks, pencils, plastic toys, leaves, spiral, star and letter cut-outs … ; cookie sheet or cardboard; direct sunlight; scissors
METHOD: Place construction paper on cookie sheet. Set the cookie sheet in direct sunlight. Let the children remove the objects at the end of the day and observe the changes in the paper. Cut the sun spot papers into booksmarks, greeting card notes …

3 1/2 - 7+ yrs
SUPPLIES: 8 - 16 popsicle sticks per puzzle; fine grade snadpaper; fine-tipped markers; medium-width masking tape; rubber band(s)
