LIFE TRACKS

The final ease into the day's pages is to record small, but meaningful details on the masthead of the 1st page. I number the pages (1/1; 1/2; 1/3; 36/1; 88/1… ). As the habit builds, the advancing numerals give me a sense of the progress. In addition, I make note of other power hour accomplishments (and shortcomings) like spiritual exercises, physical exercises … plus special events like birthdays, anniversaries … And for a sense of my own history (or maybe memoirs) I include a note about my physical location. Because I believe very strongly in 'living with an attitude of gratitude' the Morning Page closing that I seem to use most often is to express thankfulness to God / the Universe / Life and then initial the entry.

HIGH MAINTENANCE?

It's understandable if all these tools and other 'trappings sound 'over the top'. Objectively, it looks that way to me too. On the other hand, I know without a doubt (when I'm present and sane) that Morning Pages are

enormously significant to my growth as a Creative and to my overall evolution.

However, knowing that doesn't stop the temper tantrums, the personal lies, the excuses and all of the other "This is $%$@! It's a waste of time! Think of how much more creating / writing / painting / designing / idea storming / building … you could do if you weren't spending all that time doing Morning Pages!!!"

Being sweet, listening to and even coddling the artist within is a self-care investment that pays off exponentially. Try it.

You don't need to overturn a successful career in order to find creative fulfillment. It is necessary to overturn each day's schedule slightly to allow for those small adjustments in daily trajectory that, over the long haul, alter the course and the satisfaction of our careers.
